Another popular lacquered engineered wood flooring product is our 125mm Pearl Satin Lacquered Engineered European Oak Wood Flooring 18/5mm Thick – product code EO2009.

This simple but striking single plank product has a total width of 125mm. Here at Luxury Flooring, a 125mm plank width is deemed fairly narrow and would be better suited in smaller spaces within the home such as bedrooms and/or hallways. As a general rule, thinner plank widths look better in smaller spaces whereas wide planks (185+mm) tend to suit larger, open plan spaces.

EO2009 is made up of 11mm of multi-ply wood and 5mm of real European oak. The multi-ply backing is made up of cheaper materials such as birch before being finished with a 5mm veneer of hardwearing oak. A veneer of 5mm allows you to sand down and refinish the timber roughly six times in total however we don’t believe this will be necessary for at least the first 15 to 20 years.

EO2009 has been stylishly prefinished with seven coats of pearl satin lacquer, which results in the product having an extremely smooth, shiny surface. Because of this, daily cleaning and general upkeep is made much easier.

The grade of this product is rustic, which means the planks have more knots and imperfections giving the product much more character and warmth. The rustic grade is the most popular grade in the wood flooring industry today.

125mm Pearl Satin Lacquered Engineered European Oak Wood Flooring 18/5mm Thick is another of random length (RL) products. These lengths are between 300 and 1200mm, a RL product enables you or whoever is fitting your floor to arrange the planks in a staggered formation. This should create the desired natural, free flowing look.

If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Tongue and Groove vs Click

Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.

• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.

• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.

Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor, however, only click planks can be fitted this way.

Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.

Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.

Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
