Our Chocolate Hand Scraped Lacquered Solid European Oak Wood Flooring (product code SO5050) has a total thickness of 20mm, and will prove a highly resistant solution for areas of heavy foot traffic. As one of the thickest floors on the market, you can rest assured that each board will retain unparalleled structural stability for the entirety of its lifespan.
In order to deliver consistently outstanding flooring, each species used is expertly selected with durability and beauty in mind. As a result, this product is composed of 100% solid European oak with a rustic grade, for a classic warm and welcoming effect. For added texture, the surface of each board has been hand scraped, and a micro-bevel has been applied to the edges. This provides a variety of depth underfoot, giving personality to your flooring. The wood is then stained to resemble the familiar, comforting hues of chocolate, taking elegance to a new dimension. Finally, a coating of lacquer finishes the board, resting above the surface of the grain. This seals the board, providing an effective barrier to scuffs and spills, and moreover, reduces the overall maintenance of the flooring.
Once laid, the single plank effect delivers the prototypical aesthetic of traditional hardwood flooring. Whilst many solid wood floors have fixed length boards, this product uses random lengths to its advantage. Lengths range from 400mm-2000mm, and retain a consistent width of 130mm. This creates a perfect balance of uniformity and spontaneity, being completely unique without ever looking too busy.
Each plank can be sanded and re-finished up to 9 times. Whilst this won’t be necessary for at least 10 years, solid wood floors remove the need for reinstallation by allowing homeowners to remove any surface damages. Alongside this, installation is made incredibly easy with the inclusion of contemporary fitting methods. Each board is designed to fit into one another, utilising an integrated ‘tongue and groove’ installation system. Not only does this ensure security and stability, it also removes the need for additional nails and adhesives. Although this is a frequently chosen procedure, this product can be fitted the old-fashioned way too, catering to a range of preferences. Whichever method you decide to use, it won’t affect the lifespan of your flooring. As a token of our faith in the longevity of this product, we offer a complimentary 25-year guarantee with your purchase.
If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:Tongue and Groove vs Click
Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.
• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.
• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.Floating
Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor, however, only click planks can be fitted this way.
Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.Fixing
Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.
Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
