Our 150mm pearl satin lacquered European solid oak at 20mm thick is one of the most popular products on our site and it’s easy to see why. With a 20mm (2cm) thickness, it is a hardwearing, robust floor to say the least. Also, with a total thickness of 20mm, you would be able to sand down this product at least 7 times should you feel the need to. We don’t feel this will be necessary for the first 10-15 years after installation but is your preference. The 150mm (15cm) plank width of this product is deemed a regular plank width that is perfect for residential properties, particularly the living room. The make up of this product is a random length product. These lengths are between 600 – 2000mm with an average plank length of 1400mm (1.4m).

Like our other pearl satin lacquered finished products, our SO1078 product has been stylishly finished with seven layers of Osmo’s natural UV lacquer giving it that much needed sturdiness whilst still enabling you to maintain the surface’s appearance easily. With this product, each individual plank has a ‘V’ groove, micro bevelled edge detail that ultimately gives each plank additional natural definition.

In accordance with our other 20mm thick solid European oak products, this one can also be sanded down several times should you feel it necessary to do so. However, here at luxuryflooring.co.uk we don’t believe this will be necessary for the first 10-15 years at least.

The grade of our 150mm Pearl Satin Lacquered Solid European Oak Wood Flooring, 20mm Thick is ABC grade - other suppliers may refer to this grade of timber as rustic. This simply means there will be knots and natural imperfections within the batch. This ultimately gives the product that natural, flowing feel and look – something, which is only achievable with a 100% natural product. One of the questions that customers often ask is ‘what percentage of the boards can I expect to find knots and natural imperfections in?’ This is something that is completely unquantifiable due to the fact that it is a natural product. ABC or the rustic grade is by far the most popular grade of wood in the flooring industry today.

If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Tongue and Groove vs Click

Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.

• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.

• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.

Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor, however, only click planks can be fitted this way.

Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.

Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.

Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
