150mm x 600mm Brushed and UV Lacquered Click Herringbone Engineered Oak Wood Flooring – product code HE1196 - has a total thickness of 14mm with a 3.2mm hardtop wear layer. This product comes in fixed lengths of 600mm and is lightly brushed and finished with a pearl satin UV lacquer which gives the plank more texture and character.

Each plank has a 4V Groove, bevelled edge giving each plank more definition individually. This floor can be sanded down up to 4 times however it shouldn't be necessary to do so for the first 15-20 years. The grade of this product is rustic meaning the planks have more knots and imperfections giving the product much more character and warmth. Additionally, the herringbone floor is on trend this year and will help to immediately modernise your home and keep it in style.

Engineered wood floor is incredibly resistant and can therefore withstand splashes, spillages and every day wear and tear. However as this is a natural product we would always advise you to mop up any spillages or splashes as quickly as possible. Engineered flooring is also able to withstand fluctuations in temperatures which means its compatible with underfloor heating, something that is increasingly popular in modern homes. This ability to endure temperature changes also means that this product can be laid in rooms such as conservatories or basements, where other flooring could damage itself.

The HE1196 can be installed using one of three techniques. Option one, ‘floating floor’, is achieved by gluing the tongue and groove parts of the board and allow the floor as a whole to float, usually cushioned with use of an underlay. Option two would be to secret nail the tongue part of the plank into a wooden subfloor. Finally, option three would be to stick the timber directly onto the subfloor with use of flooring adhesive. Please see the full, downloadable installation guide in the installation tab above for more information.

If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Tongue and Groove vs Click

Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.

• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.

• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.

Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor, however, only click planks can be fitted this way.

Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.

Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.

Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.

Fabulous floor which always draws complimentary comments. Lasted exceptionally well - over a year now and good as new. Only scratch is where carpenter dropped an entire extremely heavy chop-saw from a height(!). Tough as old boots and looking lovely. Click system means it's much cheaper and faster to fit than traditional parquet too. Regret getting oiled for main house now - in comparison it's already getting spots and scuffs a few weeks in, whereas as this laquered finish is bomb proof a year on.
