Our Brushed and Lacquered Gunstock Chevron Engineered Oak Wood Flooring (product code CHE204) has a total thickness of 18mm, making it a perfect choice for areas of moderate-to-high foot traffic. For structural stability, a base layer composed of multiple layers of timber is compressed to a height of 14mm. Each cut of plywood is bonded together at a 90-degree angle for added support. This allows engineered boards to be fitted in areas deemed unsuitable for traditional solid wood flooring, such as basements, conservatories, and kitchens. In addition, the multi-ply construction delivers effective resistance to high levels of humidity and moisture, making it an excellent solution for rooms with underfloor heating. Above the durable base, a solid oak wear layer is attached, measuring at 4mm. Milled from a single piece of timber, the hardwood veneer makes engineered boards identical to their solid wood counterparts in both appearance and longevity. As a result, we offer a 25-year guarantee with this product, promising a sustained lifespan.

A natural grade of Asian oak is used for the solid wood veneer, demonstrating bespoke personality and character. ABCD grades take the wood’s natural imperfections, and use them to the advantage of the board. With intricate grains, complex details, and a range of colour variations, each plank boasts individuality, making for an excellent feature in any home. During the manufacturing process, a bevelled edge is cut into the face of each plank, and a wire brush is run across the veneer to remove new growth. Both procedures enhance the visual depth and physical textures of the board, creating intrigue underfoot. A gunstock stain is then applied to darken the hue of the wood, alongside a final addition of lacquer, providing an extra layer of protection above the surface. Being naturally spill resistant, the lacquer finish lowers the overall maintenance required to keep the board looking its best.

Each board measures at a fixed length of 600mm, with a width of 90mm. Fitting is made even easier with the inclusion of a ‘tongue and groove’ installation system. Similarly to a jigsaw, each plank fits securely into one another, removing the need for excess nails and adhesives.

Whether you chose to use glue, nails, or the floating method, this product always boasts supreme longevity. With a surface wear layer of 4mm, CHE204 can be sanded and re-finished up to 5 times, so you can always retain the striking appearance of your engineered wood flooring.

If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Tongue and Groove vs Click

Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.

• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.

• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.

Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor, however, only click planks can be fitted this way.

Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.

Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.

Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
