Berkeley Grouse Walnut 190 x 20/6mm Wood Flooring – product code EW2042 - is 20mm thick with a 6mm solid hardtop wear layer. This product comes in fixed lengths of 1860mm.

Walnut wood flooring is one of the most luxurious products on the market, it doesn't have the most modest price tag but once laid the true beauty and quality is evidential, completely transforming any room. This walnut product is elegantly pre finished with 8 coats of pearl satin UV lacquer giving it not only a stunning look but ultimate protection, durability and is easy to maintain.

Engineered wood, including the EW2042, is able to be used with underfloor heating, making its uses incredibly versatile. Engineered wood's ability to endue fluctuations in temperatures also means you can use it in rooms you wouldn't be able to install a solid wood floor, such as conservatories or basements.

The EW2042 can be installed using either a floating, nailed or glued technique. Option one, ‘floating floor’, is achieved by gluing the tongue and groove parts of the board and allow the floor as a whole to float, usually cushioned with use of an underlay. Option two would be to secret nail the tongue part of the plank into a wooden subfloor. Finally, option three would be to stick the timber directly onto the subfloor with use of flooring adhesive. Please see the full, downloadable installation guide in the installation tab above for more information.

Each plank has a 4v Groove, bevelled edge giving each plank more natural definition individually. This floor can be sanded down up to 5 times however it shouldn't be necessary to do so for the first 15-20 years. The grade of this product is rustic meaning the planks have more knots and imperfections giving the floor a more realistic aesthetic. The rustic grade is the most popular grade in the wood flooring industry.

If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Tongue and Groove vs Click

Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.

• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.

• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.

Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor. Both click and tongue and groove planks can be fitted this way.

Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.

Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.

Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
