Bibury Golden Distressed Oak 190 x 20/6mm – product code OD2114 - is 20mm thick with a 6mm wear layer which comes in fixed lengths of 1900mm. This product is a bespoke product that is made to order. It has been given a truly amazing distressed look with large knots and blemishes, after this the oil is applied to each plank before lightly brushing. The low shine finish makes for a low maintenance and highly durable floor.
Each plank has a bevelled edge giving every individual plank a authentic sense of definition. This floor can be sanded down up to 6 times however it shouldn't be necessary to do so for the first 15-20 years. The grade of this product is distressed meaning the planks have many knots and imperfections giving the floor much more natural character.
The OD2114 can be installed using one of three techniques. Option one, ‘floating floor’, is achieved by gluing the tongue and groove parts of the board and allow the floor as a whole to float, usually cushioned with use of an underlay. Option two would be to secret nail the tongue part of the plank into a wooden subfloor. Finally, option three would be to stick the timber directly onto the subfloor with use of flooring adhesive. Please see the full, downloadable installation guide in the installation tab above for more information.
Thanks to the way engineered flooring is constructed the material is incredibly hard wearing. This means that it is perfect for using in kitchens, where exposure to dirt is quite common. Another property of engineered wood that is worth noting is the fact that is can be used in conjunction with underfloor heating. Where a solid wood would become damaged and cracked, engineered wood can expand and contract with the heat so not to damage the wood..
If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:Tongue and Groove vs Click
Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.
• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.
• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.Floating
Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor. Both click and tongue and groove planks can be fitted this way.
Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.Fixing
Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.
Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
