Solid wood flooring hosts an array of practical benefits as well as striking beauty and timelessness, as well as adding value. This makes it an extremely popular option for homeowners.

The exquisite rich colour of this flooring would look stunning in both a traditional and contemporary interior. Its dark colour is often chosen to impress guests to your home, giving an affluent appeal. Darker flooring is advantageous as it can hide dirt better than a lighter flooring, therefore slightly easier maintenance.

Wooden flooring is one of the most durable flooring options, lasting for many years after instillation. This means it’s ideal for heavy domestic areas such as the kitchen, hallway or living room. However, stains and water can seep through the wood if not cleaned up quickly, so we’d recommend being mindful and acting fast if anything does spill. As well, scratches can occur with real wooden flooring, therefore perhaps consider keeping it away from areas where children’s toys might cause damage or if you have pets with sharp claws.

Don’t worry if the worst does happen however. Perhaps the best thing about real wooden flooring is its ability to be sanded down, therefore if any stains and scratches do impair the surface then it is not ruined. However, if you do decide to sand down your flooring due to wear and tear, this does not normally need to be done for the first 12-20 years so you can only imagine how long this impressive flooring is going to last! Our generous 25-year guarantee gives you peace of mind too!

This flooring exhibits a bevelled edge, meaning where the planks are fitted together are more distinct due to the grooves. This gives the flooring extra character and another dimension to your room. Its rustic grade means that the natural premise of the wood is preserved as much as possible, adding to the authentic look.

Installation

If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Tongue and Groove vs Click

Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.

• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.

• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.

Floating

Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor, however, only click planks can be fitted this way.

Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.

Fixing

Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.

Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
