Kahrs Classic Nouveau Collection Oak Nouveau Greige Engineered Wood Flooring - product code KAH1083 - has a total thickness of 15mm with a 3.6mm solid hardtop wear layer. This product comes in fixed lengths of 2266mm and has a brushed and lacquered finish which gives the product a protective shiny layer that dries on top of the surface of the wood and isn't absorbed as an oil is.

This product has square edges which means the planks all fit together tightly with no curved edges to create a smooth and fluid finish. Square edges are incredibly modern and help to make a room feel more clean cut and sharp. This floor is installed using a click system making it an extremely quick and easy task, perfect for DIY installation. Please see the full, downloadable installation guide in the installation tab above for more information.

The way in which engineered floor is made makes it incredibly water resistant. This makes it ideal for using in kitchens where water exposure is more common through spillages and other day to day wear and tear, which also makes it significantly easier to clean. It is also suitable to be used with underfloor heating, something that is increasingly popular in most modern homes. Engineered wood flooring has the ability to withstand fluctuations in temperatures and can therefore also be used in rooms where a solid wood could not, such as conservatories or even basements.

Installation

If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Tongue and Groove vs Click

Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.

• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.

• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.

Floating

Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor, however, only click planks can be fitted this way.

Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.

Fixing

Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.

Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
