Kahrs European Naturals Collection Oak Hampshire Matt Lacquered Engineered Wood Flooring - product code KAH1046 - has a total thickness of 15mm with a 3.6mm solid hardtop wear layer and comes in fixed lengths of 2400mm. This product has square edges which means the planks all fit together tightly with no curved edges to create a smooth and fluid finish. Square edges are incredibly modern and help to make a room feel more clean cut and sharp. The grade of this product is town, meaning the planks show some natural variation that is presented in a modern and subtle way giving a generally warm but clean look. This product has a matt lacquered finish that means your floor will have a practical finish that requires less maintenance as well as a floor that looks incredibly modern and stylish.

Because of the way in which it is made, engineered wood flooring is water resistant, making it ideal for use in kitchens or utility rooms where spillages and exposure to water is common. Because of this, cleaning your engineered wood floor is also significantly easier. It is also able to withstand changes in temperatures so is suitable for use with underfloor heating systems, which is ideal if your house comes with pre-installed underfloor heating that you are trying to work with. It is also a great conductor of heat and will therefore keep your rooms warmer for longer, so could help to reduce your energy bills.

This floor is installed using a click system making it an extremely quick and easy task, perfect for DIY installation. A ‘floating floor’, is achieved by gluing the tongue and groove parts of the board and allow the floor as a whole to float, usually cushioned with use of an underlay. Please see the full, downloadable installation guide in the installation tab above for more information.

Installation

If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Tongue and Groove vs Click

Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.

• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.

• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.

Floating

Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor, however, only click planks can be fitted this way.

Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.

Fixing

Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.

Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
