When you're looking for a new floor, something that might not immediately cross your mind is which width of plank you should be getting. Different width planks help to create different aesthetics, each with their own set of benefits. The two main width types of floor planks are either a wide or a narrow board. Here at Luxury Flooring and Furnishings we have a large range of both, plus, we offer free samples with our products giving you the chance to try before you buy. In this blog post we will hopefully help you to come to a conclusion on which width of plank is perfect for you and your floor.

Wide Plank

Wide planks are generally favoured among homeowners as they can help to create the illusion of more space in a smaller room as well as creating a minimalist look as less joints are visible. Similarly, the fewer joints on show will also make for a smoother floor underfoot. Sometimes associated with a farmhouse look, wide plank floors have made a huge image overhaul as they are now very much modern, cropping up in contemporary properties over and over again in recent years. Most wide floors are identified as such if they are generally over 3 inches in width. This classification makes the range of wide plank floors huge, giving a large category to browse within if you've decided a wide plank floor is the best choice for you. Additionally, with less planks required to cover a floor, the installation time is noticeably easier compared to narrower planks for example.

Narrow Planks

In terms of style, narrow planks have far more to offer. By choosing a narrow plank this in turn opens upstyles such as herringbone or chevron, looks that are incredibly popular right now. The herringbone floor has seen a surge in popularity recently as the vintage look makes a reappearance in the interiors world. A herringbone floor can also help a smaller room appear larger by adding a sense of dimension and pattern to the floor that creates the illusion of more floor space. Narrow planks offer a fairly traditional and classic look when compared to its wider plank counterpart. The thinner plank therefore can help in creating a retro or rustic theme, again, something that is very much currently in style.

Both wide and narrow planks have their advantages and a lot of what you should be looking at depends on your unique project. To summarise, wider planks work well in making spaces appear and feel larger thanks to the fewer join lines, however, narrower planks offer a more traditional look that is available in many more styles. Hopefully by outlining the benefits of both a wide and narrow planks we have made your decision a little bit easier as to which one is best suited for your floor.
