We work closely with other businesses within the interior design and DIY sector, and from time-to-time, we are able to bring you guest posts from them.  Here's the latest one, this time from Hartley's Rooms.

Wood flooring is stylish, durable and currently enjoying somewhat of a renaissance in UK homes.  And as with all décor, the final results rely heavily on your surrounding design choices. Flooring can be the focal part of a room, or blend into it seamlessly, depending on the colours and furnishings you pair it with.

At Hartleys Rooms, we love working alongside other specialists to deliver floor-to-ceiling brilliance. To spark your imagination, we’ve been playing matchmaker with wood floors and the potential routes of your interior design.

Whether you’re a vintage buff, a rustic traditionalist or a modern homeowner, there’s a concept here to excite you…

Distressing Your Retro Taste

It’s no secret that retro styles are very much in vogue, and will be for the foreseeable future. From recycled coffee tables to industrial trolley shelving, there’s a definite appetite for turning shabby into chic. And we believe that no floor compliments that better than distressed wood.

How so? Well, it’s been made to imitate the bumps, nicks and blemishes of raw timber. A rich oak tone is perfect for the dark, woodland feel that many vintage homes aspire to. Lay it under exposed brickwork, or a copper pendant feature, for the final seal on your favourite look.

A Shrine To Sparsity

Pick the brain of any interior style guru, and they’ll struggle to define ‘minimalism’ without saying what it’s not, i.e. extravagant and busy. We’d also point to the thin, geometric, often reflective qualities of minimal furniture, which give the impression of opening up the room.A fitted bedroom can effectively encompass this style of design, as the alcoves, shelves and cabinets are placed exactly (and only) where you need them to be, and don’t become extraneous. White is a popular colour, dashed with grey or pastel shades. Floor-wise, go for something that’s equally as light and subtle, such as a chalk-white or smoked wood finish.

Studying Up On A Cosy Aesthetic

Let’s look to another, ultra-personal part of the home – your study, where work mixes with a glass of wine or whisky in the evening. It’s natural to start at your desk, choosing perhaps a thick mahogany unit with a modern swivel chair. Then there’s the textured, brown leather armchair, right next to the gleaming bookcase and floor lamp…

For a good accompaniment – one that’s really going to bring out the tones of a rug with tassels and dark shading – we suggest an antique, gold-brushed floor. The interplay of light and dark will be something to behold, and it fits with the old-timey appeal of a personal office space.

Our visual buttons have been pushed, and continue to be, by the sheer wealth of combinations you can dream up. Wood floors are the benchmark for the lower level of your style plan, but each piece matters – check out Hartleys Bedrooms for bespoke furniture and room design, to explore how we might complement your floors!
