With 2018 drawing to a close and a fresh start on the horizon, there is no better time to start thinking about making those all-important home improvements in time for the new year. Whether you’re planning on buying a whole new range of furnishings or simply re-arranging your existing interior décor, it is imperative that you keep your flooring co-ordinated if you want to achieve the most impressive results. In our last post of the series, we demonstrated how you can make effective changes to your Kitchen with just a few simple steps. In the same detail, we are turning to the Living Room, giving you the inspiration to optimise your renovation. But remember: what matters most is your preference! Only make a decision that feels right for your home.

Go Darker

As the cold weather sets in for the autumn and winter, the popularity of darker interior reaches its yearly high.  As a result, we’ve seen a rise in the demand for walnut and dark oak flooring with a lower grade to create that classic rustic feel. Although this look is timeless, why not stay ahead of the curve and opt for a solid or engineered parquet pattern when choosing your flooring? Not only will this create a point of contrast with any existing fabrics in your living room, it will also serve as a modern, intricate feature that will impress any guests that come to settle in as the evenings grow darker.

The Benefits of Solid and Engineered Wood

Solid and engineered wood can often be the most versatile choice of flooring when co-ordinating your furniture for two reasons: 1.) Their high levels of durability can withstand the increased footfall within your living space during the cold and drizzly months. This means that your desired shade wont easily wear or fade and begin to clash with your furnishings. 2.) If you decide to make steps towards re-decorating again, solid and engineered woods can be sanded and re-stained with oils and lacquers to perfectly match the new furniture in your home, saving the need to lay new flooring again and again.

Re-work and Re-style

Alternatively, look towards solid or real wood pieces in your living space and restyle them to work with your flooring. This can mean sanding and re-staining, or simply painting in a colour that suits the new look of your room. Whilst cabinets and coffee tables may be your first stop, don’t forget to pay attention to less noticeable wooden features. Items such as chair and sofa legs can often go overlooked, causing problems with co-ordination. If your seating has a light or coloured fabric, we recommend darkening the shade of any wooden attachments. This will allow the material to pop and become more noticeable. We also suggested that you incorporate a range of woods in varying shades when co-ordinating your furniture. A mixture of complimentary and contrasting textures will bring more depth to the aesthetic of your living room.

Accessorise

Don’t be afraid to switch up any extras or accessories. Something as simple as a new rug can call attention to the detail in your flooring and create continuity amongst your furnishings. Experiment with different patterns, fabrics, and textures to find the best possible results for you and your home.
