Wood flooring is the ultimate choice in luxury home design, and when it is laid correctly it can provide you with many years of enjoyment. In order to ensure that this is the case for your flooring it is vital that you make a few essential preparations before installing your new floor.

As a beautiful natural material, your real wood flooring may contract or expand in response to the atmosphere in your home. If this were to take place after your flooring was installed then it could result in warping or gaps that could spoil the finished look, which is why it is so important to give your flooring time to acclimatise before it is laid. So follow these simple steps to ensure that your brand new flooring has the best possible start.

1. Stabilise the temperature

Use your central heating or air conditioning as normal for at least 5 days before introducing your flooring into the room. This will ensure that the temperature and conditions reflect the usual state of your home, so that your flooring is introduced into the most appropriate environment.

2. Lay the flooring out

With the flooring still in its packaging, lay it out across the floor of the room that it is going to be installed in. The packages should be stacked so that the air and humidity can be distributed equally, making sure that roughly every half a meter is supported, so bowing in the middle of the packing does not occur.

3. Give it time

Leave your flooring in place for a minimum of 5-7 days, while maintaining the same balance of temperature as you achieved in step 1. During this time the real wood in your flooring will have a chance to settle and may expand or contract slightly depending on factors such as temperature and humidity.   Here at Luxury Flooring and Furnishings we are the experts when it comes to flooring.
