One of the most common mistakes with wood flooring is coming up short and it is a disaster. To stop this error from occurring we always recommend including

5% – 10% additional flooring onto the surface area required.

For example:

If you require 20m2 then you should order between 21-22m2

There are many factors that can leave you with less flooring than you require, so ordering wastage can have multiple benefits. One of the main benefits is that it allows you to have a choice about the appearance of the floor. Some solid and engineered wood will come with grain variation and knotting so that the planks look as realistic as possible. This also means that some planks can vary in colour and by ordering wastage you are able to dismiss any planks that you dislike.

By ordering wastage you also allow for any mistakes that may occur during the fitting process, no matter how experienced the fitter, everyone makes mistakes. When staggering flooring it tends to mean that many planks will need cutting down to size, however if the plank is measured wrong then you will need extra planks to retry.

Furthermore, over time wood flooring can become worn and damaged, it is always nice to have extra supplies for the future in case certain planks may need replacing. Sometimes a range of flooring may become discontinued, so trying to match the existing planks can be nearly impossible; by accounting for wastage you are able to match existing planks identically.
