If you’re tired of skirting round the noisy patch of your wood flooring, don’t despair! Follow these simple steps to rid your flooring of any squeaks and creaks.

Dust it with Talc

Wood flooring reacts to temperature and humidity, so you might find that it develops a squeak during certain types of weather. A simple way to combat this is to sprinkle some talcum powder over your flooring at the source of the sound, which will help to remove any moisture and prevent the boards from rubbing together and creating a noise.

Check the Nail

Another common source of noise is when an old nail begins to work its way loose, which adds flex to the floorboard and means that it moves as you walk over it, causing a creak as it rubs against other boards. If you discover any loose nails, simply reaffix or replace them to make sure your flooring is nice and secure, not to mention nice and quiet.

Screw Down to the Joist

If these quick fixes don’t seem to solve your problem then you may need to find a more permanent solution. If the source of your creak is above a joist, adding a few extra screws will give it extra stability and reduce the bend and flex that leads to noises. If you’re planning on adding screws to your floor make sure you drill a pilot hole first to avoid splitting the wood.
