If you’re lucky enough to have a home that greets you with a stunning hallway when you open the door then this post is for you. As you’re probably aware, the hallway can be where your home makes its first impression on visitors, so it’s a pretty important feature. But just how do you ensure something like a hallway makes a lasting impression on people that come to your home? The answer may be right at your feet..

Flooring can help create an everlasting visual appeal, especially bespoke floors such as parquet or solid/engineered wood. Whether it’s a dramatic effect or a cohesive flow through your home that you’re after, we’re certain we can provide the right advice on how to give your hall the perfect makeover.

Parquet

Lets start with the gem that is parquet flooring, which may seem like a bold choice initially but like we say; it’s all about making an impression. Whilst parquet may remind many of the 70s and old church halls, it has recently seen a resurgence in the world of interior design and is a staple choice in many modern homes. Of course parquetry makes for a better floor if your hallway is slightly larger, this is because it’s such a complex and intricate pattern that strives from being spread out as oppose to being smaller and overwhelming the area.

In terms of practicality parquet is one of the best surfaces to use when it comes to flooring, they are incredibly durable and due to the way that the blocks are constructed they offer a unified solidity once laid. Whether you live alone of in a busy family home, the hallway is the one place in your house that is guaranteed to see a substantial footfall and with that in mind it pays to have a material that is able to stand this.

Although it is physically strong there’s nothing to say that parquet wont get worn or damaged over time, but the great thing about this is that it can be counteracted as parquet is one of the types of floors that can be sanded and refinished multiple times should this need doing. This is also good if you’re the type of person who likes to revamp their home every few years and gives you lots of creative freedom that you wouldn’t have with something like laminate or vinyl flooring.

Wood Flooring

Much like parquet flooring, wood floors (whether solid or engineered) are both a durable and aesthetically pleasing option for your hallway. As mentioned above, you tend to have two options when it comes to wood flooring; solid and engineered. The difference between the two is that one if made of real wood and the other is made of composed layers (usually made from plywood) and has a solid wood top to resemble the real thing.

There are also a number of species and grades of wood floors available, from light oaks to deep, dark walnuts, and prime grade to a rustic classic. With so much to choose from you can rest assured knowing that the perfect hallway floor may be closer than you think.

If you are looking to install your floor over underfloor heating then we would advise against solid wood and suggest that you opted for engineered. Engineered wood floors are known for being much better at handling changes in temperature and moisture levels, so if you feel that your hallway is at risk of these conditions then an engineered floor would be your safest bet.

Of course the final decision comes down to you, you may not like parquet or wood floors at all, but if we were to recommend anything for your hallway it would be one of these!
