When you decide to begin decorating your home, while it’s an exciting prospect, it can also be a daunting task. For instance, there’s a lot to consider; wall paper or paint, blinds versus curtains, spot lights or chandeliers… the list goes on. Our suggestion? Start with flooring!

Choosing flooring may not seem like the most important question on your interior design list, but it should be the first one:

Why Redecorating Should Start with the Flooring

When rejuvenating your home don’t overlook the fundamentals. The same way that foundations of a building are paramount to keeping it sturdy, the flooring you choose in your home will act as the foundation for the décor; a dependable base to build upon.

So, like most things, when it comes to redecorating your home, you should start from the bottom and work your way up.

How to Choose the Right Flooring

Choosing the right flooring is your first hurdle. Finding one that suits both the needs of your home and meets your interior design requirements may at times seem like an impossible task.

There will always be variables, but these are the four main you should be considering when shopping for flooring:

  • Budget

We all want a home fit for royalty but it shouldn’t leave you feeling like a jester. Make sure you’ve factored in all the costs relating to your interior design project before allocating an appropriate budget for the flooring from your allowance.

  • Pets and Children

Pets and children make for a happy and vibrant household, but often also a costly one. Is your flooring of choice sturdy enough to withstand heavy footed and clumsy playtimes?

  • Traffic

How busy is the room that you’re planning on redecorating? Busy communal areas like bathrooms and kitchens will need flooring of a durable nature, whereas bedrooms can allow for softer materials like laminated wood or carpet.

  • Cleaning and Maintenance

Let’s be honest, no one enjoys cleaning, so if you can find an option that is easy to clean (like an easy to wipe wooden floor) that will probably trump your other top choices.

Pull the Theme from the Floor

One of the oldest, tried and tested techniques for deciding on an interior design theme is by drawing on a neutral tone from your flooring. Why? Because drawing on an element from this will bring the theme together throughout the whole room, resulting in a space that’s cohesive and inviting.

Colours tend to fall into one of three primary behaviours: active, passive, and neutral. The word neutral, in fact, means impartial or unbiased; not boring like many people often assume. Drawing out an active colour tone could be overwhelming and a passive colour theme may go unnoticed. As a result, using neutral colours is both common and effective.

Neutrals (think white, black, brown, cream, grey… any muted earthy tone) will pair with all other colours, it’s what makes them neutral. This versatility makes neutral flooring great candidates for decorating, choosing the right flooring first time will remain timeless even when trends and personal preferences change.

Since neutrals pair well, they provide excellent backgrounds to other colours and maintain a solid foundation for decorating no matter your style. Neutral flooring allows for accent pieces to be added, like statement rugs or bright furniture.

So, there it is, reasons why your redecorating project should start with the floor!
