When it comes to the finer details of flooring it may be difficult to know what will look best in your property. When you’ve chosen a finish and a grade the next thing to think about is which plank edge you’d like. The two main edges on flooring planks are bevelled and square both of which give a very different look.

At A Glance

If you’re looking for a quick answer a bevelled edge plank has slightly curved edges that create small grooves in between the planks for a more rustic and genuine look. On the other end of the scale, square edged planks fit together tightly on all sides without any grooves for a smooth and clean-cut finish.

Bevelled Edged Plank

bevelled edge floor is given its name thank to the subtle ‘V’ all the way around the plank. The boards with a more prominent V are called bevelled and those with a mode subtle V are named micro bevelled boards. These bevels can be created by either hand or machine and can give a uniform or irregular look, both of which work wonders depending on your desired look. No matter if you choose a micro bevel or a regular bevel, there will be a noticeable separation between the boards. Of course, a regular bevel will show more of a gap compared to a micro bevel and this is something you should consider when deciding which to go for.

Square Edged Planks

Planks with square edges have boards with perpendicular edges from being cut to exactly 90 degrees. If you choose a square edged plank your boards will fit together closely on all sides so you can barely see the join of one board and another. This creates a very sleek and clean-cut look that avoids dust getting trapped between planks. Square edged planks are perfect for those who are looking for an upmarket modern look and when paired with stylish furniture pieces that can create a truly stunning contemporary aesthetic. With a square edged product we would always recommend using a professional fitter to lay your floor unless you have in depth previous experience yourself. This is simply because the straight edges are very unforgiving and one small mistake can cause issues laying other planks down.

Both edges look incredibly and ultimately its up to you as to which one you think is perfect for your home. Most of the decision comes down to what style you’re aiming to achieve with a bevelled edges for a rustic look and square edges for a modern look. If you’re still unsure about which one would be best for you, why not order yourself some free samples so you can see for yourself how each look and try them in your own home to give you a better idea of which on would be best.
