When it comes to the bathroom, most people simply opt to tile the floor, but this doesn’t mean you have to! Yes tiles are convenient, they’re waterproof and easy to keep clean but as the winter months draw closer do you really want something so cold under your feet? Now we’re not saying that you should throw it back to the 70’s and carpet the bathroom. No way! But there are so many different types of flooring that are just as suitable as tiles..

First up, lets discuss the qualities that a bathroom floor must have:

  • Water resistant - Probably the most obvious and important trait for a bathroom floor to harbour (get it, harbour, water… ). Anyway, bathrooms are subject to increased levels of moisture and temperature changes, it’s important that your floor can cope with this.
  • Easy to clean - This is a giver with any floor, when you’re busy running a home it’s important that tasks such as cleaning are made as easy as possible.
  • Durability - The bathroom is a busy room in any home, it’s crucial that your floor can withstand a heavy footfall.
  • Aesthetically pleasing - As well as being practical it’s seriously important that you love the look of your floor too, after all it will be in your bathroom for quite some time!

Wood Floors

“What do you mean wood floors?!” - well, what we mean is you can have wood flooring in your bathroom! Of course there’s a catch, there always is … the wood floor that you can have in your bathroom isn’t 100% solid wood, it is actually called engineered wood. Due to the way in which engineered wood is manufactured it does not react as dramatically to changes in temperature or moisture levels as solid wood does. This is due to the fact that it is made up of multiple layers and the core of the board is really stable and robust thanks to these layers, meaning that the floor can withstand fluctuations in both temperature and moisture. Engineered wood looks especially good in larger bathrooms and brings a real rustic feel to the room, idyllic for a free standing bath and shabby chic look!

Vinyl Floors

Vinyl flooring has seen a huge rise in popularity over the last decade. What was once seen as a “cheap and nasty” floor is now known for being great value and durable! Vinyl is actually the synthetic cousin of Lino and is both stain and water resistant, making it perfect for a bathroom environment. The great thing about vinyl is that it can be made to look like any other surface, so it’s a smart substitute for the likes of natural stone and real wood. Unlike tiles where they feel really cold under your feet, vinyl is actually a really good insulator and gives a lot more of a warmer feel.. it’s also pretty soft too, especially nice if you’re stepping out of the bath on a cold, miserable night.
