With the threat of climate change looming, we know the importance of doing our bit for the planet. Which is why, throughout December, we decided to give a little something back with our Plant a Tree campaign.

We’re proud to announce that as a result of the campaign, we’ve successfully planted over 1,000 trees!

With the support of our partners, our trees are now planted in reforestation developments across the globe to help decrease carbon emissions and support local forestry.

Read on to find out more about where our trees are planted and how our campaign is helping fight climate change.

We plant trees with Ecologi

Where are the trees planted?

Using their research and reforestation evidence, our tree planting partners have split the number of trees planted across both the UK and the tropics.

The UK has one of the lowest forest cover rates in Europe (13%). This is a concerning figure given trees are instrumental in decreasing carbon pollution.

The tropics are often affected by deforestation caused by the exportation of coffee, meat, cocoa and other produce. Approximately four trees are estimated to be lost each year per each individual, which is taking a devastating toll on forest cover rates in these areas.

As a result of this, our partners were able to recognise where our trees should be planted, which resulted in two fantastic projects in the UK and Ethiopia.

A flourishing future for Gewocha Forest, Ethiopia

The Gewocha Forest, located in the northwest of Ethiopia, is one area where deforestation and land degradation has resulted in a poorer standard of living for residents. According to Global Forest Watch, Ethiopia lost 19,800 hectares of tree cover in 2021, and 4.2% of the country’s humid primary forest was lost between 2001 and 2021.

Following these devastating figures, our partners WeForest are committed to supporting the reforestation project happening in Gewocha Forest.

The project aims to restore 10,000 hectares of degraded land in the Amhara region of Ethiopia by supporting the introduction of 11.9 million trees. These will be introduced by three methods: planting, assisted natural regeneration, and conservation.

From the orders placed in December, we were able to plant over 900 Cordina Africana trees in Gewocha Forest. Through this, we’re able to support 7,894 farmers and their families in the 14 communities that will directly benefit from the Gewocha Forest project. Approximately 42,000 people will benefit indirectly too.

Reforestation projects in Scotland, UK

Like many regions across the globe, Britain is deeply reliant on forest cover, and sadly wildlife in the UK is currently in decline due to deforestation and the collapse of ecosystems.

Working with The Future Forest Company (FFC) to restore land with a combination of reforestation, natural regeneration, and regenerative agriculture practices, we’ve planted over 100 trees in their forests at Brodoclea and on the Isle of Mull. The FFC team are now also rapidly expanding into new, larger planting sites across Scotland!

The land where our trees are planted has a rich history behind it and is supported by Scottish Natural Heritage. The sites are carefully monitored and audited to ensure quality forestry techniques are used to give the ecosystems the best chance of thriving.

How will this help the planet?

The process of reforestation is one of the best tools to tackle the current climate crisis. Researchers have revealed that space available for trees is much greater than we previously thought – meaning we could reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere by 25% with the help of forestry.

By working with our partners at Ecologi to plant trees across the globe, we can directly support communities, local wildlife, and ultimately reduce carbon emissions with our Plant a Tree campaign.
