Solid Wood flooring is comprised of 100% wood and no other material. Each plank comes from one species of wood, and can vary in cut-style, which affects the appearance in terms grain and grade. The finish on our wood floors also varies, giving you plenty of options for your home. Whichever you decide on, solid wood will also give your home a natural, warm and comforting feel.
Why Choose Solid Wood?
Solid wood adds a traditional and homely look to a room that brings with it comfort and warmth. Wood can also match any decor without looking out of place, and can relay impress guests thanks to its natural appeal. These floors add personality and character as well as being functional - they are durable and can last a lifetime, only requiring sanding every decade after the initial sanding which should occur 15-20 years after purchase. Wood floors can be sanded 8 times on average, adding value to your home and saving you money over time. Real wood also attracts fewer allergens and mould than other flooring types, thus is more hygienic for your home.
How Is It Made?
Each plank is cut from the wood to the specified size, which typically ranges from 18 to 25 cm, and is done using one of three methods that affect the look and cost of your flooring. These cutting methods are; flat-sawn, a cheaper popular option that is characterised by triangular looking grain; quarter-sawn, which appears more random and rustic in nature; and the more expensive rift-sawn, which gives a more uniform horizontal grain appearance. After cutting, the wood is then put in a kiln to dry, and then finished as per the manufacturer's instructions.
What Different Styles Are Available?
It is important to consider finish and grade. Finishes we stock are unfinished, hand scraped, lacquered, oiled, brushed and lacquered, or brushed and oiled. Unfinished means no finish has been applied, making it the most natural but least protected from damage, although you can finish it yourself at home. Hand Scraped is flooring that has been 'scraped' by hand to look more authentic rustic and distressed. Lacquered floors have a protective layer applied, and this lays on top like a film to protect the floor, making it appear shinier. Oiled floors offer protection just as well, but the oil seeps into the wood to do this, causing the natural look to be unaffected. Floors that have been brushed have been made to look more rustic during production, so like hand scraped floors, scratches and other damage will only add to the look of the floor over time.
Wood grading ranges from prime, to select, to natural and finally rustic. These are progressively the least to most natural looking. Prime contains the least variations like knots, sap, colour variation or mineral stains, and as a result looks the most uniform. Rustic on the other hand contains knots, sap, colour variation and mineral stains for example, making it the most natural looking grade available.
We offer mostly oak floors, as these are the most durable and best value for you, but walnut, bamboo and acacia are also available if you prefer a different shade or grain frequency for example. There is more information on this in each product description.
It is important to note that being a natural product, it is impossible to tell exactly how your floor will look, due to the slight colour variations with different batches and unpredictability of knots. We recommend prime grade or a non-wood floor for a more predictable and uniform look.
