Solid wood flooring is a natural 100% wood product with each board coming from just one piece of solid wood which is cut down to the desired size, typically between 18 and 25 centimetres. The style of the cut of the wood can vary from flat-sawn, which is the most recognised style with a triangular grain, to quarter-sawn where the material is divided up into quarters, then rift-sawn, which gives a finish where the grain is horizontal. After the cutting process is complete, the material is put into a kiln for drying and then finished.
Solid wood flooring is seen as a great way to give your home or office a warm, rustic and natural feel.
Why Solid Wood Flooring?
Firstly, solid wood floors are incredibly durable, especially when compared with carpet, which can often require frequent repairs, cleaning and in some cases replacing. This type of floor can last a lifetime without having to be replaced. Real wood flooring also attracts less dust, allergens and mould than its alternatives.
Thirdly and finally, solid wood flooring looks fantastic, and can add real character and warmth to your home.
Which wood should I choose?
With so many different species of wood, each with varying patterns, colours, styles, lengths and everything in between, choosing a particular type of wood for your solid wood floor can be seen as a challenge.
We are proud to offer a number of species, including oak, walnut, acacia and bamboo. Oak is the most popular due to its strength, durability and versatility.
How do I lay my solid wood floor?
Installing real wood flooring isn’t an overly complex task, however if you have any doubts, then we would recommend hiring a floor fitter to do it for you. If you do want to install it yourself, it is best to fix the planks down as opposed to leaving them floating, as this can cause the flooring to be lifted. Fixing the solid wood flooring to the floor allows breathing space to reduce the risk of buckling.
More information can be found on our blog article which gives a complete installation guide, or our downloadable installation guides found on each product page.
What are the alternatives?
Solid wood floors look great, but they’re not for everyone. Fortunately, we have many other options available, including engineered wood flooring, parquet or herringbone, as well as laminate and vinyl. Please browse our range and feel free to order your free sample.
