Our 180mm Brushed and Oiled Solid European Oak Wood Flooring, 20mm thick - product code SO1096 – is the widest plank width we offer in our 20mm thick brushed and oiled solid range.

SO1096 is made purely from solid European oak. Once the timber has been machined into planks, it is scraped with a brush, removing only the softer grain whilst leaving the hard grain intact. This process creates a textured surface on each plank – giving the product a more natural feel as well as look.

Furthermore, we would strongly recommend a ‘brushed’ product if you have small children and/or pets at home. The brushed markings make it very difficult to notice any scratches/marks on the surface, which are bound to occur over time.

Once the brushing process has been completed, seven coats of hard wax oil are added to the surface.

The thickness of this product is 20mm (2cm) and the lengths are random between 600mm and 2000mm. With a 20mm total thickness, you are able to sand and refinish this product up to seven times. Once the oak has been sanded, you would need to reapply some oil to the surface area or another choice of finish e.g. pear satin lacquer.

180mm Brushed And Oiled European Solid Oak Wood Flooring, 20mm Thick comes with a tongue and groove fitting mechanism offering you a few different installation options; glued, secret nailed or as a floating floor. The most popular way of installing a solid product would be to glue it directly to the subfloor, using flooring adhesive. Flooring adhesive can be found under our ‘accessories’ section.

The grade of our SO1096 is ABC, which means you a likely to come across natural knots and imperfections. This grade of timber (ABC) is often known as the ‘rustic’ grade and is seen as the main attraction when buying a solid wood product. If you require any matching accessories for your project, we offer a full range of accessories in the ‘brushed and oiled’ finish including door profiles, scotia beading and skirting boards.

Installation

If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Tongue and Groove vs Click

Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.

• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.

• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.

Floating

Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor. Both click and tongue and groove planks can be fitted this way.

Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.

Fixing

Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.

Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
