Weeton Straw Oak 130 x 20mm (product code SO1080) has been expertly hand selected for its unrivalled practicality and gorgeous appearance. In order to create a flooring product with boundless character, a rustic grade of oak timber has been chosen. With a wider variation of knots, blemishes, and shades, each board will deliver the authentic personality of traditional hardwood. During the manufacturing process, a golden stain has been applied to the surface of the wood. This is a perfect addition to the lower grade, bringing warm and welcoming textures to the aesthetic of any room.
Each plank comes in varying lengths, with a consistent width of 130mm. The narrow boards can range from 400mm to 2000mm long, making for a unique feature once fitted. Whilst the single plank effect typically generates a uniformed appearance, the inclusion of random lengths eliminates any formality, providing a cosier feeling to your home. Narrow boards also bring proportion to larger rooms, appearing more visually complex than their wider counterparts. For added detail, a micro-bevel has been cut into the face of every board. The board’s sloped edges provide individual distinction once fitted, allowing for pronounced detail.
This product has been given a brushed and lacquered finish. Before construction has been completed, the surface is met with a wire brush, eradicating new growth whilst simultaneously creating fluctuations in depth. As a result, intriguing textures are met underfoot, and older grains are exposed for a worn appearance. Finally, up to 7 layers of lacquer are applied to the face of each board, imparting a characteristic shine. Not only is this an elegant and complimentary addition to the wood, the lacquer finish also provides exceptional protection to each board, forming a spill resistant barrier above the grain.
With a thickness of 20mm, this choice of flooring is suitable for areas of heavy footfall (including hallways, passages, and living rooms), and can be floated using the specially designed ‘tongue and groove’ system. As one of the thickest boards we have on offer, you can sand and re-finish the surface up to 9 times over the course of its life. In fact, we are so confident with the longevity of this product, we offer a 25-year guarantee with every purchase!
If you’re looking to install solid or engineered wood flooring by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:Tongue and Groove vs Click
Before you purchase your solid wood flooring, check which installation system it uses. There are two main types: ‘Tongue and Groove’ and ‘Click’.
• Tongue and Groove is more traditional, ensuring dimensional stability and strength. Along one edge, a ‘tongue’ protrudes from the centre of the board, whilst on the other, an indented groove is cut into the wood. This allows each board to fit together securely.
• Click installation is quick and hassle free. Like tongue and groove, click boards fit together, however, the click method allows the boards to lock into place, snapping together with a single movement.Floating
Many fitters prefer floating their boards due to quick and easy installation. Floating does not require you to fix your flooring to a subfloor. Both click and tongue and groove planks can be fitted this way.
Adhesive is applied to the groove for added stability, and underlay is fitted underneath the board. This cuts down on labour, whilst ensuring that your boards are comfortable and strong underfoot.Fixing
Fixing your flooring to the subfloor will encourage a long lifespan and minimal movement. Both Tongue and Groove and Click boards can be fitted this way, however, it is more popular with the former.
Depending on the material of your subfloor, boards can be fixed in a variety of ways. For solid surfaces such as concrete, adhesive is applied directly under the board. For wooden subfloors, the boards can be ‘secret nailed’ along the tongue. Both methods are equally beneficial, giving you outstanding results.
