If you’re looking to install carpet by hand, here are a few things to bear in mind:

Backing

Before you purchase your carpet, check which backing has been attached. There are three main types: ‘Felt’, ‘Action’, and ‘Gel’.

• Felt backing is flexible and cost effective, removing the need for underlay. This is a perfect choice for DIYers and homeowners working on a tight budget.

• Action backing is durable and strong, and will deliver an outstanding lifespan. This choice of backing is fitted using carpet grippers, proving quick to install.

• Gel backing combines the versatility of felt and the dimensional stability of action backed carpets. Like felt, gel backing does not require underlay.

Using Adhesive

Adhesive can be used with or without underlay. Once the subfloor is prepared, adhesive is applied directly under the felt or gel backed carpet, holding it permanently in place.

If underlay is installed, a double stick method should be employed. Glue down the underlay using a release type adhesive, before fitting the carpet above with a permanent adhesive. Remember, underlay is optional with felt and gel backed carpets.

Stretch Fitting

Stretch fitting is more traditional, and is the preferred method for installing action backed carpets. Felt backed carpets can also be fitted using this method, however it is more common with the former. Do not use this method for gel backed carpets.

Carpet grippers are fitted around the perimeter of the room, and underlay is applied to the subfloor. Once this has been achieved, the action or felt back carpet is attached to the gripers, and stretched into place to create an even surface with no ripples.
